As a Camp Director at Youth Nations, I spend my days thinking about creating transformative experiences for young people. But some of the most powerful transformations I\u2019ve witnessed happen not at camp, but in a small library in Soweto, during just 20 minutes a week.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m proud to be one of the parent volunteers from the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) driving the Thabisile Reading Project.<\/strong> Twice a week, our team of twelve mothers sits down, one-on-one, with a second-grade student from Thabisile Primary School. For those twenty minutes, we dive into the world of letters and sounds together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this so critical? The statistics are staggering: 78% of South African 10-year-olds cannot read for meaning.<\/strong> For many of the children we work with, learning to read is simultaneous with learning the English language itself. Our focus is on basic literacy and phonics, building a foundation that many of us take for granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Youth Nations, we know that sustainable impact is built on partnership. This project’s success is a testament to that principle. It thrives thanks to an incredible, trust-based partnership with the teachers and leadership of Thabisile Primary. We are learning from each other, and it\u2019s this collaboration that allows us to support these children effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is entirely funded by our parent community through initiatives like our annual cake sale. This grassroots funding allows us to buy books, pencils, and learning materials. And at the end of the year, we give each child a book of their own. In a country where books are a rarity in many homes, this isn’t just a gift\u2014it\u2019s a key that unlocks a world of future opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our long-term vision? To see this model evolve. We aim to recruit more reading mentors from the parents within the Soweto community itself, transforming this into a true partnership between our two school communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative is a powerful reminder that you don\u2019t need a grand plan to make a difference. Sometimes, all it takes is a open heart, a good book, and 20 minutes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
